Niacin Dosage

Everyone needs a certain amount of niacin from food or supplements for the body to function normally. This amount is called the dietary reference intake (DRI), a term that is replacing the older and more familiar RDA (recommended dietary allowance). For niacin, the DRIs vary with age and other factors and are given in milligrams of niacin equivalents:

  • Children: 2-16 milligrams daily, depending on age
  • Men, or those assigned male at birth (AMAB): 16 milligrams daily
  • Women, or those assigned female at birth (AFAB): 14 milligrams daily
  • If pregnant: 18 milligrams daily
  • If breastfeeding: 17 milligrams daily
  • Maximum daily intake for adults of all ages: 35 milligrams daily

Most people can get the niacin they need by eating a healthy diet. If your doctor prescribes niacin, you might want to take it with food. This can prevent upset stomach.

To reduce flushing — a harmless but uncomfortable side effect of niacin that describes redness and warmth in the face and neck — your doctor might recommend taking niacin along with aspirin and avoiding alcohol and spicy foods.

Since niacin can be used in different ways, talk to your doctor about the best dosage for you.

Patients with active peptic ulcer disease

Patients who have active liver disease or present with unexplained and persistent elevations in hepatic transaminases

Patients with hypersensitivity to niacin or any component of this medication

Когато се включат продукти, богати на B3, предозирането и нежеланите реакции са изключени. Само хора, приемащи лекарства на базата на витамин РР, могат да се сблъскат с този проблем. С увеличаване на препоръчителната доза се развива депресивно състояние, появяват се замайване, сърбеж по кожата и фалшиви тактилни усещания (парестезия). Може да се появи мускулна болка и дисфункция на сърдечно-съдовата система („срив“ на кръвното налягане, аритмия).
Честите нежелани реакции включват:

  • разширяване на кръвоносните съдове на шията, лицето и гърдите;
  • стомашни разстройства, гадене и повръщане;
  • повишаване на концентрацията на кръвната захар.

Някои хора изпитват замъглено зрение и повишени нива на пикочна киселина, което води до развитие на подагра. При приема на ниацин се препоръчва да се следи състоянието на черния дроб, за да се изключи възможна дисфункция.
