Tom’s Guide Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is an amped-up Galaxy Note with a faster S Pen built in, lots of camera improvements, a brighter display and faster charging. This is a stellar phone overall, but it’s also pretty pricey and the battery life could be better.

Samsung knows what power users want, as evidenced by the Galaxy S22 Ultra. This new beast adds the Galaxy Note’s best feature while also offering a ton of other upgrades. Yup, there’s an S Pen built in, but there’s a lot more going on with this flagship as Samsung tries to top our best phone list.

For starters, the S Pen is more responsive, as Samsung made it 70% faster with less latency. The display is also brighter and more colorful than anything we’ve tested, and you get faster 45W charging.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra’s biggest upgrades come with its cameras, as Samsung is shooting to overtake the iPhone 13 Pro Max and Google Pixel 6 Pro as the best camera phone with the help of a raft of upgrades. These include a bigger main sensor for better low-light photos, an AI-boosted portrait mode and a new Super Clear lens.

On the other hand, Samsung is asking a lot of money — $1,199 — for a phone that now comes with less RAM than before, and the S22 Ultra costs $100 to $300 more than its top competitors. That’s one of the factors that makes the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra vs. OnePlus 10 Pro or Google Pixel 7 Pro vs. Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra decision a tough one.

Based on my testing, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is the best Android phone money can buy if not quite the best phone overall.

Bad title

The requested page title is invalid. It may be empty, contain unsupported characters, or include a non-local or incorrectly linked interwiki prefix. You may be able to locate the desired page by searching for its name (with the interwiki prefix, if any) in the search box.

Possible causes are:

  • an attempt to load a URL such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/| (the | character is unsupported);
  • an attempt to load a URL pointing to a «non-local» interwiki page (usually those not run by the Wikimedia Foundation). For example, the URL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/meatball:WikiPedia will give this error, because the «meatball:» interwiki prefix is not marked as local in the interwiki table. Certain interwiki prefixes are marked as local in the table. For example, the URL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/meta:Main_Page can be used to load meta:Main_Page. All interlanguage prefixes are marked as local, and thus URLs such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/fr:Accueil will work as expected. However, non-local interwiki pages can still be accessed by interwiki linking or by entering them in the search box. For example [[meatball:WikiPedia]] can be used on a page, like this: meatball:WikiPedia.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra in a person’s hand, showing its lock screen.

The phone weighs more than the Pixel 6 Pro, too, though the iPhone 13 Pro Max still beats it at 240 grams. Google’s premium flagship already reminded me of the Note 20 Ultra, aside from its colorful two-tone design and camera bar. Instead of a rectangular module at the top left corner housing the array of sensors, the S22 Ultra’s cameras are neatly laid out in two columns on the back with no boundaries containing them. I prefer this streamlined, less cluttered look to the Note 20 and S21 Ultra’s versions.

I also appreciated the S22 Ultra’s Gorilla Glass Victus+ covering, especially after it fell from the top of a cabinet and survived without a scratch. I was somewhat disappointed that the review unit I received was the boring black version, not one of the other three color options. If I were shopping for myself, I’d choose either the green or burgundy, which I got to see in person at a recent Samsung hands-on event.

Samsung Galaxy S22: display

The clearest way to tell the new S22 devices apart is by screen size. All three models feature AMOLED displays with slick 120Hz refresh rates and support for HDR10+. What differentiates them are the diagonal display dimensions: the S22 measures in at 6.1in, the S22 Plus at 6.6in and the S22 Ultra at a palm-filling 6.8in – the same as last year’s S21 Ultra.

Both the S22 and S22 Plus feature Full HD+ resolutions. While the larger screen of the S22 Plus translates to a lower pixel density, the difference will be difficult to notice in reality. Like the S21 Ultra, the S22 Ultra features a QHD+ resolution, making it sharper than the screen on the iPhone 13 Pro.

The entire Galaxy S22 trio also offers variable refresh rates, thanks to Dynamic AMOLED displays. This means each model can adapt to the task at hand, delivering the slickest 120Hz visuals only when necessary – and slowing things down to conserve battery life when the task at hand doesn’t demand buttery smooth motion. The S22 and S22 Plus can drop down to 10Hz, while the S22 can do as low as 1Hz for extreme efficiency.

That’s equivalent to just one image per second – so it will presumably be reserved for a mode which puts your phone into a sort of battery-saving stasis, or tasks which primarily involve audio.

Samsung claims that the S22 Ultra’s display can achieve a peak brightness of 1750 nits (up from 1500 on the S21 Ultra). It’s also been certified for 100% Mobile Colour Volume in the DCI-P3 colour range. Translation? It should look as vibrant as any other smartphone out there – and the 3,000,000:1 contrast ratio should give it plenty of visual punch.

Samsung Galaxy S22 design

  • Not a huge redesign over its predecessor
  • Comes in a few attractive color designs
  • Has a strong glass rear

Samsung evidently opted not to stray far from the Galaxy S21 design from the previous year, but there are two differences — one is noticeable, the other not so much.

The Galaxy S22 has a 6.1-inch display, making it 0.1 inches smaller than its predecessor, but it’s not something you’ll notice. What is noticeable is the new Gorilla Glass Victus Plus back – the rear was plastic last year. This change gives the phone a much more premium feel, and the Galaxy S22 now feels every bit as solid, and looks as elegant, as the iPhone 13.

This is a phone that’s small enough to slip into your pocket or bag and forget about. In today’s world of oversized phones (like the larger Galaxy S22 Ultra), the S22’s 70.6 x 146 x 7.6mm, 168g chassis feels puny. Apple’s iPhone 13 mini, which Apple is discontinuing, previously held the ‘small flagship’ crown, though.
