Specialists from the Rosseti Northern Caucasus company stated that in the Republic of Dagestan since the beginning of the year, 58 cases of illegal connection to power grids for cryptocurrency mining have been recorded.
This is the maximum figure in the regions of the North Caucasus Federal District. According to power engineers, in monetary terms the volume of stolen electricity exceeded 650 million rubles.
“80 cases of unaccounted electricity consumption by mining farms were stopped by Rosseti Northern Caucasus in the regions of the North Caucasus Federal District for 8 months of 2025. The anti-rating of unauthorized connection to power grids for obtaining cryptocurrency is headed by the Republic of Dagestan: 58 cases of energy theft worth 76 million rubles were recorded here,” the company indicated.
In Ingushetia, the work of 14 mining farms was stopped, causing damage amounting to 475 million rubles. Five violations were found in Karachay-Cherkessia, three in North Ossetia, and one in the Stavropol region. Law enforcement agencies have opened criminal cases regarding a number of acts of theft of electricity.
Energy experts emphasized that illegal mining causes significant damage to power lines and transformer substations, and leads to a large number of fires at energy facilities.
From January 1, 2025 to March 15, 2031, the government introduced a ban on cryptocurrency mining in ten regions of Russia. These include Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, North Ossetia and Chechnya.
Previously, the director of the Department of Electricity Development of the Ministry of Energy, Andrey Maksimov, said that the ministry does not yet expect new restrictions on cryptocurrency mining to appear.
