TechRadar Verdict
The Apple AirPods Pro 2 brought all-new features, but notably no price increase from the original AirPods Pro released in 2019, while competitors got more expensive. A new H2 chip powers these true wireless earbuds bringing greater sonic performance and excellent noise cancellation, as well as improved battery life. They’re not perfect for Android users, but we were absorbed by the performance on offer here – it’s a hugely worthwhile upgrade from Apple.

Introduction
Apple has come a long way from the basic ‘buds bundled with iPods and early iPhones. The original AirPods Pro earned coveted places on many a best headphones list, and were one of Stuff’s favourite products of recent years; the blend of convenience, excellent ANC and impressive audio made them a must-have for Apple owners. Do the AirPods Pro 2 improve the formula?
They look pretty much identical as before, but Apple has worked hard to improve noise cancellation and battery life. But there’s no shortage of true wireless competition. Here’s how the AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) stack up today.

Apple AirPods Pro 2 vs. AirPods Pro: Controls
The force sensors and “Hey Siri” voice activation work flawlessly on both the AirPods Pro and Pro 2. Expect responsive input when performing the single/double/triple and long-hold gestures. Saying the Siri wake word phrase out loud instantly fires up the AI bot for use, while Apple’s mics capture every syllable and verbal request with precision, resulting in accurate responses.
Wear detection operates slightly quicker on the AirPods Pro 2 because of the skin-detect sensors. Apple also introduced touch volume controls on the latest model, which can be activated by sliding up or down on either force sensor — the feature works incredibly well.

AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation: Verdict
I’ll reiterate here that whatever way you go, you’re getting excellent sound quality, active noise cancellation, and all-around Apple magic. There are quite a few similarities between the two models, so I’ll sum up the biggest differences below.
Functionally, the biggest difference is that the AirPods 4 are one-size-fits-all hard plastic earbuds while the AirPods Pro 2 come with four sizes of silicone ear tips for a customizable fit. The silicone ear tips also form a seal in your ear that hard plastic cannot. That’s a pretty important difference, because that seal prevents sound from leaking into your ears, doubling the efficacy of the Active Noise Cancellation and giving you a more fully immersive sound experience. It also prevents sound leaking out. However, some people just don’t like the plugged ear feeling that a silicone tip gives, preferring the hard plastic ear tip.
Price is a pretty obvious difference, with about $70 separating their retail prices. What may offset the price a little bit is that the AirPods Pro 2 come with a lanyard and a USB-C charging cable, which the AirPods 4 do not. The AirPods 4 are also two years newer (or one year, if you count the September 2023 AirPods Pro 2 refresh) than the AirPods Pro 2, so bigger discounts are more likely on the AirPods Pro 2.
The AirPods Pro 2 have a touch sensor that the AirPods 4 lack. This allows you to swipe up and down to adjust the volume. You get about one extra hour of listening time on a single charge with the AirPods Pro 2. The AirPods 4 themselves, as well as the charging case, are slightly smaller and lighter than the AirPods Pro 2.
Though it’s not a difference yet, there are some exciting new software features for ear health coming later this fall only to the AirPods Pro 2: Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, and Hearing Protection.
You really can’t go wrong here. Both of these models will bring you hours of enjoyment for years to come.
AirPods Headed For India; Apple Targets International Markets With New Production Hub
Apple is taking a bold step in its manufacturing strategy by shifting AirPods production to India. Following the successful establishment of iPhone manufacturing in the country, Apple aims to transform India into a vital hub for production outside of China. This move reflects Apple’s growing ambition not only to produce goods locally but also to cater to global markets.
The AirPods will be produced at two key facilities: Jabil’s factory in Pune will create the casings, while final assembly will happen at a new Foxconn site in Telangana. This operation is expected to be on a scale similar to that of the iPhone manufacturing, with a strong focus on exporting to international markets. According to sources, the global demand for AirPods significantly outweighs that in India, which is why Apple is prioritizing exports from the very beginning.
#TechWithMC | Giving further boost to #India’s electronics manufacturing space, tech giant Apple plans to start making AirPods in the country
What’s noteworthy is that this expansion is happening without the usual production incentives offered for other electronics. Despite this, Apple’s commitment to India remains strong, fueled by its previous successes. In the upcoming fiscal year, Apple is expected to export around $14 billion worth of iPhones from India, accounting for 14% of its global production.
Key players like Foxconn, Pegatron, and the Tata Group, which recently took over Wistron’s iPhone operations, have been essential in facilitating this rapid growth. AirPods production is set to kick off next year, with ambitious plans to quickly ramp up exports. While Apple does intend to sell AirPods in India, the primary goal is to serve customers around the world.
This move underscores India’s emerging role as a significant manufacturing alternative to China, which has long been Apple’s main production center. The Indian government is enthusiastic about Apple’s expansion, recognizing the positive impact of high-end product manufacturing on the nation’s export profile. As more of Apple’s suppliers establish operations in India, the country is solidifying its place in the global tech supply chain.
Apple’s AirPods production is booming in India, aiming for a global export boom. #Apple #AirPods #MadeInIndia— InvestSmartly (@fineducation777) October 3, 2024
While state governments have been proactive in offering incentives to attract Apple’s factories, the central government has shown flexibility, allowing Chinese component suppliers to set up in India amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. However, not all of Apple’s products will be manufactured locally. For example, MacBooks are not part of the immediate plans. Despite the government’s push for laptop manufacturers to ‘Make in India,’ Apple appears to be taking a cautious approach.
Apple’s decision to manufacture AirPods in India highlights a strategic shift to diversify its supply chain while reinforcing India’s role in the global tech industry. This move signals a promising future for both Apple and India as they work together to reshape the landscape of technology production.
Apple AirPods Pro 2 review: Siri features
Here’s where the H2 chip really shines. Being able to use hands-free Siri is great — as is getting notifications read to you when they come in. With the help of the AirPods Pro 2, Siri actually feels like a smart assistant rather than a glorified food timer.
As far as outright new features are concerned, there aren’t many here. Everything you could use Siri for with the original AirPods Pro is available on the AirPods Pro 2 and vice versa. The small difference here being that the earbuds now have more precise tracking when you enable the Find My… option in the AirPods settings.
