16 pro max
While Apple no longer sells the iPhone 13 Pro Max (refurbished models excluded), you can still snag one from various third-party retailers and carriers. The iPhone 16 Pro Max was released on September 20, but like the rest of the iPhone 16 series, it’s been hit with shipping delays. Most major retailers are estimating orders won’t arrive until the middle or end of October.

iPhone 16 Pro
The iPhone 16 Pro is a compact alternative to the Pro Max, with almost identical specs. So if you want top-tier power, superb cameras and a great screen in a smaller size and at a lower price, this is an excellent choice. Just be aware that the battery life isn’t quite as good.
For
- Cheaper than the Pro Max
- A compact powerhouse
- Camera Control functionality
Against
- Worse battery than Pro Max
- No AI at launch
iPhone 16 Pro Max
The iPhone 16 Pro Max is Apple’s biggest phone ever, with a massive 6.9-inch screen, incredible battery life, and an unsurprisingly big price tag. It’s the best iPhone you can buy, but it’s only marginally better than the iPhone 16 Pro.
For
- Huge screen
- Superb battery life
- Camera Control functionality
Against
- Big and heavy
- Very expensive
The iPhone 16 series is composed of four phones, but if you want one of Apple’s very best handsets then there are really only two that you’ll be choosing between – the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
These are Apple’s most premium handsets, and they’re more similar than the Pro and Pro Max models are in some years. That said, they still have plenty of differences. So below, you’ll find details of all the key specs and features on these phones, and how they compare.
But if you’re looking for how we found these phones in use, check out our full iPhone 16 Pro review and our full iPhone 16 Pro Max review.

iPhone 16 Pro Max review: Review updates
- Sept 27: Reports of the iPhone 16 Pro Max crashing the camera app whenever it’s launched from the lock screen with the Camera Control button. It appears to be intermittent, but we have not come across this issue with our test unit.
iPhone 16 Pro Max review: Verdict
The iPhone 16 Pro Max is indeed an iterative upgrade, and maybe it wouldn’t feel that way if Apple Intelligence was available today along with all the promised features. Instead, it’s going to trickle out over time. So I would not be in a rush to upgrade.

Having said that, I think the iPhone 16 Pro Max is the best phone money can buy right now if you want the biggest screen and longest battery life. It lags in zoom vs the S24 Ultra, but you get more endurance, better camera quality and plenty of creative features like Photographic Styles and Audio Mix.
I actually prefer the AI capabilities of the Pixel 9 Pro XL series, with its smarter Gemini Live voice assistant (though you only get free access to Gemini Advanced for a year) and other features like Add Me for photos and Pixel Screenshots. But the Pixel’s performance and battery life trail the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
For me, the iPhone 16 Pro Max retains its title as the best phone, but it’s not because of Apple Intelligence.

The iPhone 16 might be a clear sign that a portless iPhone is still on the table

Moral of the story is that if you have a smartphone, REGARDLESS of the manufacturer, put it in a protective case, and DO NOT drop it.I’ve never understood, other than the clicks, some of these «youtube» types that just can’t wait to grab a new device and see what it takes to destroy it.

This is a great article! I thought phonearena would criticize this phone.»My honest take is that its exorbitant price right now shouldn’t bother us. Personally, I’m thinking less about this product in particular, and more about the tri-fold phones that are going to come in the future, further perfecting this form-factor and making it more accessible.»Whenever I come across any outstanding piece of new technology that could sell well but it costs very high, I feel the same.Sidenote: Strangely, I didn’t feel the same way about visionpro. Probably because apple doesn’t decrease prices as much ( thought from the back of my mind i am not fully sure. Vision pros of the future could lower their prices significantly idk)

As someone with long hair and a beard, I hate Face ID with a passion. It doesn’t work 90% of the time, and makes me have to do multiple attempt only to eventually have to type out my passwords like it’s 2005. It’s made every new Apple device abject misery to use for me, to the point where I’ve had to disable passwords and am considering switching to android.Speaking as a designer, Whoever thought this was a good idea needs to go back to design school.
Peak Apple stubbornness: iPhone 16 almost has Touch ID but Cupertino refuses to make it happen
MsPooks says:
This is an interesting segment. People obviously have little desire to unfold their foldables (which is why they clamor for regular-sized front displays), yet this one asks you to unfold TWICE, in different directions. For a premium price.

One of the reasons I’m upgrading is Apple Intelligence, though I’m realistically prepared to be underwhelmed by it.
Most aren’t upgrading to iPhone 16 because of Apple Intelligence. Should you?
Apple Intelligence features will need some work
We can’t give a definitive verdict on Apple Intelligence features just yet, because outside of a developer beta, they don’t exist yet. Apple’s not going to make them available to all users until an October software update. So one of the marquee additions to the iPhone 16 Pro will be missing in action when the phone goes on sale September 20.
That’s less of a concern if you view Apple Intelligence as a welcome, if not necessarily vital, addition to your smartphone. But if the promised AI features are your primary reason to consider an upgrade, you might want to hold off on the iPhone 16 purchase until you see just how polished the new features are. That could mean waiting a few months or as long as a full year, at which time the iPhone 17 models will be arriving.
iPhone 16 Pro outlook
There’s definitely a lot to like about the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, particularly if you’re most interested in things like camera performance and battery life — two of the main drivers of whether to get a new phone. We need to complete our iPhone 16 Pro testing, but on paper, the new models look like they’ll deliver solid photos and last a long time on a charge. And they’ll do at that with a bigger screen.
It’s Apple Intelligence that figures to be the biggest thing standing in the way of an easy upgrade decision — not because the AI features don’t look impressive. We’ve certainly like what we’ve seen from demos, but we don’t know how that will translate into real-world use. And that uncertainty may be enough to convince some would-be upgraders to press pause for now.
