Thread: 1998 BMW 740iL (E38) All new suspension, left old shocks — ride rough. What’s wrong?

I have a 1998 BMW 740iL E38 and I just replaced nearly the entire front and rear suspension. I’ll list below what I put in. I left the old shocks and springs because there was no oil leaking and they looked fine and I am wondering if that was a mistake. I spent so much on the rest of the suspension that I just couldn’t afford to do the four shocks.

I initially decided to replace the suspension because there was a grinding noise when turning, there was a loud clunking when going over any bumps, there was clunking at other times, and I felt it was getting unsafe. There was a steering shimmy at all speeds but it got worse as the speed increased. Cornering made the car lean a bit. I replaced as follows:

Front Lower Suspension Control Arm and Ball Joint Assembly (Lemforder)
Front Upper Suspension Control Arms (Traction/Tension Struts) and Ball Joint Assembly (Meyle HD)
Sway Bar Links/Suspension Stabilizer Bar Links (Lemforder)
Steering CenterDrag Link (TEW)
Steering Idler Arm (Febi)
Steering Tie Rod Ends (TRW)
Sway bar bushings (Febi)
Rear Suspension Guide Links / Control Arms (Lemforder)
Rear Suspension Integral Links (Lemforder)
Rear Suspension Control Arms and Ball Joint Assemblies (TRW)
Rear Suspension Ball Joints (Lemforder)
(I left the rear swing arms — those bushings appeared fine and still had a lot of spring when detached from the hub)

What I replaced was really worn. I hadn’t realized until I took the parts off but they were shot (I’ll do a separate write up on that), I am no mechanic and I am learning as I go along, but I was meticulous. Everything is torqued to spec (except the front lower ball joints — couldn’t get torque wrench in there — had to guess. may be too tight. let me know if that could be an issue). I weighted the car as per BMW specs, to normal position (had to have my dog sit in the back to give it the last 60 lbs. ). I aligned the car myself (Toe front and back, camber back) but got it exactly to spec. It was perfect when done but it took me hours to align it.

I expected to have that luxurious smooth ride back but I was disappointed that, if anything the ride is rougher. The handling on the other hand is much much better. The car feels extremely tight and handles very well in all aspects. All of the clunking is gone and the steering is tight. On a straight road I can take my hands from the wheels and it drives straight. it is perfect. I have never had a professional alignment give me that. I tested the car on the highway and it performs perfectly. I took a 35 mph curve at 60 and I could hear the rear tires skid ever so slightly but the car was nearly level and under complete control. That was amazing. It feels like it sits higher but measured it does not.

The only part I cannot figure out is that I hear all the bumps in the road. When new The car had a glide across bumps and I don’t recall hearing the road. I don’t know how much of that was gone before I changed the suspension because of the clunking masking any road noise. I am wondering if I did anything wrong or if it is just the shocks or springs. I measured the ride height and it was to spec (619 front and 569 rear under normal position).

So the car glides like an athlete now but I can hear the road. every bump in the road.. any ideas? Is it the shocks? How do I tell if the springs are bad — I assumed by the height. Did I di something incorrectly. Any help appreciated.
