The Good

Let’s start with the good bits. I really like the design of the new AirPods 4. That tiny case is a masterful earbud triumph, fitting into even the tightest of pockets with no problem at all. The buds themselves nestled inside are tiny and immaculately shaped, and, just like every other AirPods model that’s come before them, fit perfectly in their plastic homes. Apple says that they’re more comfortable as well, although I’ll get to that bit and my ears later.

You’d have thought that a tiny case like that would be easy to lose — and while yes, it is easier to misplace, the active noise canceling model comes with Find My functionality so I can track them around my house with a ping, and even find out if I’ve left them at my desk or a coffee shop table when I stand up. The cheaper one doesn’t have that feature, so you’ll want to be a bit more careful when you leave them lying around — if they disappear down the side of the sofa, they’re gone.

I also like the active noise canceling on board. No, of course, it’s nowhere near as good as the noise canceling in the AirPods Pro 2 and it’s passively sealing silicon tips, but it does a relatively good job at keeping annoying noise out while I’m trying to work or listen to my favorite playlists. The other noise canceling modes are also good, including adaptive and transparency mode — although I do wish there was a way to switch them with the force touch panels on the stems.

Build & design

When Apple’s AirPods first launched in 2016, they were a mixed bag. The design was questionable at the time, despite going on to be prevalent in the market, and the sound quality wasn’t the highest calibre either. It wouldn’t have been unfair to liken their aesthetic to that of the toothbrush heads you pop on your Oral-B.

That design has been refined as the years have passed, however. The AirPods 3 that arrived three years ago stuck with the open-ear (eartip-less) fit but reduced the length of the stem quite significantly, as well as changed the shape of the earbud itself, offering subtly different contouring. Most of our in-house reviews team got on with them like a house on fire, although some did complain that after a while their inner-ear cartilage felt like it was on fire.

For both AirPods 4 models, that iconic, white, open-ear design has been further refined. At first glance, they don’t look all that different from the AirPods 3, but this is an updated design and one that Apple claims is its most comfortable ever. We put the buds in our ears at the Apple event in California and they fit snugly and securely, instantly feeling like they belonged.

Apple settled on this refined design using a data set compiled from thousands of ear shapes and over 50 million data points that have been precisely mapped and analysed. They were very comfortable based on our brief listening experience, but testing earbud comfort properly requires spending hours (rather than minutes) with them in your ears. Still, if you are asking us now whether they are the most comfortable of the in-ear AirPods range, first impressions would agree that they are.

The open-ear design does, of course, mean that you don’t get the acoustic seal that you do from the eartip-inclusive AirPods Pro 2 and similar competitors such as the aforementioned Sonys and Boses and Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4, but it’s also a matter of personal preference as to whether you find the more intrusively burrowing eartip design more comfortable and nicest to wear long term or not. The AirPods 4 do have a vent system to help with pressure equalisation, though, and we are glad that they are adequately IP-rated (IP54) for dust, sweat and water resistance.

Much like the AirPods 3, the AirPods 4 have short stems that feature a force sensor allowing for various controls. There is no volume control as there is on the AirPods Pro 2, but you can press and hold to switch between modes – more on those in a second – while a simple press will let you pause or play music. Double-pressing skips forward tracks, while triple-pressing goes back a track. These gestures can also be used to answer, end and mute calls.

The charging case has also been redesigned for the AirPods 4 and is 10 per cent smaller than the AirPods 3’s case. Honestly, their predecessor’s charging case isn’t exactly what we would call big, but the AirPods 4 case is certainly compact in the flesh. It ditches the pairing button on the rear, which does make us a little nervous as sometimes physical buttons are useful for rebooting devices or forcing connections, but we hope this won’t be an issue. The LED on the front of the charging case will also only light up when the case is open, rather than indicating charging as it did with previous iterations.

The charging case for the AirPods 4 with ANC model has a couple of neat features that the standard model’s case doesn’t. Firstly, a built-in speaker makes it easier to find using Apple’s Find My function if you misplace it – an inevitability if you have ever had a pair of AirPods! This is also a feature of the AirPods Pro 2’s case. And secondly, it is also Qi-wireless charging compatible too.

Both AirPods 4 charging cases are now compatible with Apple Watch chargers, however, which will no doubt come as good news for some.

AirPods 4 vs. AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation

If you’re confused about why there are two different pairs of AirPods 4 that sell for different prices, I don’t blame you. Hopefully, I can make it simple: the $129 pair doesn’t have active noise cancellation. The $179 does have active noise cancellation, along with a transparency mode and a feature called adaptive audio that blends ANC with transparency automatically based on environmental sounds.

Another difference to note is that the pricier AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation have a different charging case, which packs Find My (a must if you’re prone to misplacing your earbuds) and wireless charging. As features carried over from AirPods Pro 2, these are big selling points.

Possible causes are:

  • an attempt to load a URL such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/| (the | character is unsupported);
  • an attempt to load a URL pointing to a «non-local» interwiki page (usually those not run by the Wikimedia Foundation). For example, the URL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/meatball:WikiPedia will give this error, because the «meatball:» interwiki prefix is not marked as local in the interwiki table. Certain interwiki prefixes are marked as local in the table. For example, the URL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/meta:Main_Page can be used to load meta:Main_Page. All interlanguage prefixes are marked as local, and thus URLs such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/fr:Accueil will work as expected. However, non-local interwiki pages can still be accessed by interwiki linking or by entering them in the search box. For example [[meatball:WikiPedia]] can be used on a page, like this: meatball:WikiPedia.

Apple AirPods 4: Software and performance

While battery life improved with the AirPods 3, these gains were nullified when Spatial Audio was enabled. We’d hope to see longevity meaningfully improved on the AirPods 4. Again, Apple hasn’t been crystal clear on this yet.

Already found on the AirPods Pro 2, the H2 chip is more efficient than the H1 equivalent found in the AirPods 3. And it is here in the AirPods 4 – which means both sets of AirPods 4 get personalised Spatial Audio. It also supports Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity, which itself is more efficient and more stable than Bluetooth 5.0. The H2 chip’s computational smarts can also contribute to enhanced audio quality, although it’s not clear how much of an impact this would have without ANC.

Adding the H2 chip to the AirPods 4 mirrors the trickle-down approach that Apple takes to its smartphone processors. Assuming that the AirPods Pro 3 are also on the horizon (at some point), quite possibly equipped with a new H3 chip, then the H2 makes sense as an incremental performance upgrade for the AirPods 4 – at least for the full-price version.

Other advancements mooted by Mark Gurman for future non-Pro AirPods models include temperature sensors and support for some kind of hearing data. That has come as a software update to the AirPods Pro 2, but not to these models.

Apple AirPods 4: Release date

Apple announced the new AirPods 4 at the Glowtime event, on September 9th. You’ll be able to pre-order the AirPods 4 the moment that the Apple Store goes back online after the show.

They will both become fully available for purchase on September 20th, shipping out on the same date to those who preordered.

AirPods 4 vs AirPods 2: Design

The AirPods 4 have recieved a totally new design with this refresh, and there are some big differences from the old model. The only thing that’s remained the same, in fact, is the finish of the AirPods, for unlike the colorful AirPods Max, the AirPods 4 are only available in the shiny white plastic finish. That might not come as a surprise as almost every pair of in-ear AirPods come in the same hue.

The rest of the design, however, is a massive update: The stems have been shortened over the AirPods 2, making them look smaller in your ear. The opening for the drivers has been widened as well, hopefully not only improving the sound but also their comfort. Apple has paid special attention to the comfort of the buds this time around, apparently using 50 million data points to make them as nice in your ears as possible. That’s a big bonus over the AirPods 2, which aren’t particularly comfortable at all.

The case has shrunk as well, for what Apple calls «the smallest AirPods case ever». It’s received a USB-C port for charging, and it looks like a smaller version of the case that the AirPods Pro 2 come in.

The AirPods 2, on the other hand, have aged. They’re still white, like the new ones, but the case is longer, the earbuds much bigger, and it still uses a lightning port at the bottom for charging. If you’re looking for a pair of AirPods that have an up-to-date design, you’re going to be better off with the AirPods 4.
