There’s a lot to consider when trying to decide between buying the new iPad Pro 2024 vs Microsoft Surface Pro 10, the latest flagship tablets from Apple and Microsoft.

With its fancy new OLED display, speedy M4 chip and $999 starting price the iPad Pro 2024 appears to deliver a lot of value for a premium tablet. But the Microsoft Surface Pro 10 ($1,199 to start) looks to be more capable and easier to work on, as it comes with a built-in kickstand and all the versatility of Windows 11.

But don’t count Apple out of the productivity conversation—some of us here at Tom’s Guide feel the iPad Pro 2024 could be a legitimate laptop replacement when kitted out with a proper detachable keyboard, something you can buy for either tablet.

I’ll show you exactly how these two premium tablets stack up against each other in this iPad Pro 2024 vs Microsoft Surface Pro 10 breakdown.

Bad title

The requested page title is invalid. It may be empty, contain unsupported characters, or include a non-local or incorrectly linked interwiki prefix. You may be able to locate the desired page by searching for its name (with the interwiki prefix, if any) in the search box.

Possible causes are:

  • an attempt to load a URL such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/| (the | character is unsupported);
  • an attempt to load a URL pointing to a «non-local» interwiki page (usually those not run by the Wikimedia Foundation). For example, the URL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/meatball:WikiPedia will give this error, because the «meatball:» interwiki prefix is not marked as local in the interwiki table. Certain interwiki prefixes are marked as local in the table. For example, the URL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/meta:Main_Page can be used to load meta:Main_Page. All interlanguage prefixes are marked as local, and thus URLs such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/fr:Accueil will work as expected. However, non-local interwiki pages can still be accessed by interwiki linking or by entering them in the search box. For example [[meatball:WikiPedia]] can be used on a page, like this: meatball:WikiPedia.

iPad Pro (2024) vs iPad Pro (2022): price and availability

The iPad Pro (2024) (Image credit: Future)

The iPad Pro (2024) was announced on May 7, 2024, and it’s available to pre-order now, with the device shipping on May 15.

The iPad Pro 11-inch (2024) starts at $999 / £999 / AU$1,699, which gets you a 256GB Wi-Fi model. It tops out at $2,299 / £2,299 / AU$3,629, which gets you a 2TB Wi-Fi and cellular model with nano-texture glass (an optional extra that’s only available with 1TB and 2TB models).

The larger iPad Pro 13-inch (2024) starts at $1,299 / £1,299 / AU$2,199, rising to $2,599 / £2,599 / AU$4,479 at the top end – in both cases in the same configurations as the iPad Pro 11-inch model.

As for the iPad Pro (2022), that’s now been discontinued (though some third-party stores will still stock it for a while). The official price starts (or started) at $799 / £899 / AU$1,399 for an 11-inch Wi-Fi model with 128GB of storage.

The iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2022) starts at $1,099 / £1,249 / AU$1,899 (again for a 128GB Wi-Fi model), and it tops out at $2,399 / £2,679 / AU$4,099 (for a 2TB cellular model – though there’s no nano-texture glass available here).

So, the iPad Pro (2024)’s starting price is $200 / £100 / AU$300 higher than the iPad Pro (2022)’s, and it tops out at a higher level too. Note, however, that you get twice as much storage in the base 2024 model than the 2022 one, so that goes some way to justifying the higher starting price.

Amazing OLED display

People have been clamoring for an OLED iPad Pro for ages, and now it’s finally here. The new design is nice but the Ultra Retina XDR display (as Apple dubs it) could be this tablet’s main selling for some people. To my eyes, the screen is both bright and colorful. The contrast between dark and light elements is astonishing, delivering beautiful photos and videos. It’s really quite striking.

I watched a YouTube video called “LG Jazz HDR UHD” and was floored by how magnificent it looked on the iPad Pro. The pure black elements served as an excellent contrast to the vibrant colors. On top of that, the 120Hz refresh rate ensured everything moved silky smooth.

If you like digital comics, you’ll have a great time on the iPad Pro. Color comics like Conan the Barbarian #9 and monochrome books like Savage Sword of Conan #2 look equally fantastic. The former’s rich colors and dark shadows make the story feel more alive, while the latter’s deep black inks let me see individual lines in great clarity.

Moving over to our display test, the new iPad Pro’s color reproduction, color accuracy and brightness aren’t much different than the previous model. However, the OLED display helps everything appear much richer — especially colors. Even if the iPad Pro 2024 has comparable color values to the previous model, the overall picture quality is much better thanks to the display’s OLED technology.

I’m a professional writer but I have a hard time conveying just how good the iPad Pro’s OLED display appears. This is arguably the best OLED display I’ve ever seen on a tablet. You need to see it to believe it.

Outlook

The testing team at Tom’s Guide has put the new 2024 iPads through the gauntlet, and they sailed through with flying colors.

While the iPad Pro’s eye-catching OLED display couldn’t quite achieve the heights of brilliance advertised by Apple, it still looks amazing and gets plenty bright. Underneath that screen the M4 chip drives the slate to new heights of performance, achieving some of the best benchmark test results we’ve ever seen in a tablet. And with tested battery life between 13-15 hours, depending on settings, I can confidently say it’s the longest-lasting iPad yet.

And it should be, because it costs at least $1,000 to buy one. That’s why it’s so nice to report that the significantly cheaper iPad Air 2024 is no slouch where it counts, delivering great battery life (11+ hours tested), lots of speed for browsing the web or gaming on the couch, and a bright, beautiful screen.

These are two of the most exciting tablets to be released in 2024, and now that we’ve had a chance to test them ourselves I’m confident in saying they’re some of the best iPads you can buy.

The iPhone 16 might be a clear sign that a portless iPhone is still on the table

p51d007 says:

Moral of the story is that if you have a smartphone, REGARDLESS of the manufacturer, put it in a protective case, and DO NOT drop it.I’ve never understood, other than the clicks, some of these «youtube» types that just can’t wait to grab a new device and see what it takes to destroy it.

This is a great article! I thought phonearena would criticize this phone.»My honest take is that its exorbitant price right now shouldn’t bother us. Personally, I’m thinking less about this product in particular, and more about the tri-fold phones that are going to come in the future, further perfecting this form-factor and making it more accessible.»Whenever I come across any outstanding piece of new technology that could sell well but it costs very high, I feel the same.Sidenote: Strangely, I didn’t feel the same way about visionpro. Probably because apple doesn’t decrease prices as much ( thought from the back of my mind i am not fully sure. Vision pros of the future could lower their prices significantly idk)

Huawei Mate XT Preview: Here’s to the crazy ones

Mourningstar says:

As someone with long hair and a beard, I hate Face ID with a passion. It doesn’t work 90% of the time, and makes me have to do multiple attempt only to eventually have to type out my passwords like it’s 2005. It’s made every new Apple device abject misery to use for me, to the point where I’ve had to disable passwords and am considering switching to android.Speaking as a designer, Whoever thought this was a good idea needs to go back to design school.

Peak Apple stubbornness: iPhone 16 almost has Touch ID but Cupertino refuses to make it happen

MsPooks says:

This is an interesting segment. People obviously have little desire to unfold their foldables (which is why they clamor for regular-sized front displays), yet this one asks you to unfold TWICE, in different directions. For a premium price.

First tri-foldable Mate XT phone lands with 10-inch display and $3,000 price

iphoneisboss says:

One of the reasons I’m upgrading is Apple Intelligence, though I’m realistically prepared to be underwhelmed by it.

Most aren’t upgrading to iPhone 16 because of Apple Intelligence. Should you?

Bottom line

For all its strengths, the iPad Pro still doesn’t make a great laptop replacement. Not only is iPadOS not good for laptop-like productivity, but you can get a real laptop like the MacBook Air M2 for hundreds of dollars less.

We might reach a point when the iPad Pro becomes a legitimate laptop replacement. Every new iPad Pro iteration seems to be inching closer toward that potential. But until iPadOS becomes more productivity-friendly (or Apple ditches it for a touch-screen-friendly version of macOS), the iPad Pro won’t replace your laptop.
