I won’t speak to unsubstantiated rumour too greatly within a review, but we’ve heard multiple rumours for yet unannounced RTX 30-series cards with possible higher memory capacities than those currently available, including an RTX 3080 with 20GB VRAM, an RTX 3080 Ti with 20GB VRAM, and even an RTX 3060 with up to 12GB VRAM.

Our Verdict
The RTX 3060 Ti is exactly what we expected from a fourth-tier RTX 30-series graphics card, but that’s no mark against it. Nvidia’s Ampere cards offers an almost unprecedented leap in gaming performance over past generations, and the RTX 3060 Ti manages to deliver more of the same on a slimmer budget.

- Verdict
The Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti may come as a surprise considering its launch ahead of a standard, non-Ti RTX 3060. Or it would have if word of its arrival hadn’t been plastered across the internet for months now. Yet even if it breaks convention, it is nonetheless a welcome addition to the RTX 30-series lineup: as a sub-$400 card, it’s a far more affordable Ampere graphics card that its forebears.
The cheapest of the lot up until now has been the Nvidia RTX 3070, and while being a great card for 1440p and 4K gaming it still necessitates a considerable chunk of change by way of its $499 (£469) price tag. The RTX 3060 Ti goes some some way to dropping required pay-grade for Ampere at $399 (£369).
Of course its closest match remains the RTX 3070, and its similarity to the bigger sibling runs deeps. Both use a matching memory loadout—8GB of GDDR6—and make use of the same GPU at their core, namely the GA104, fabricated on Samsung’s 8nm process. The RTX 3060 Ti delivers a slightly cut-down payload of 4,864 CUDA Cores divided across 38 SMs, compared to the 5,888 cores and 46 SMs within the RTX 3070—a 17% reduction in graphics-chomping silicon.
That also makes for fewer RT Cores and Tensor Cores, although as you’ll see in our benchmarking that doesn’t make the RTX 3060 Ti any less a ray tracing card in its own right. These are 2nd generation RT Cores and 3rd generation Tensor Cores, and we’re seeing a notable improvement over those included with the Turing architecture and the RTX 20-series.
And it’s exactly a comparison with the RTX 20-series lineup that Nvidia is hoping for. While priced the same as the RTX 2060 Super, the RTX 3060 Ti is aimed squarely at the performance of the second-run RTX 2080 Super. This is a $399 card facing down what was a $699 graphics card at launch. While that’s no longer a graphics card you can really buy—nor can you really purchase any card whatsoever at the time of writing—the RTX 3060 Ti clearly offers a more performant and affordable alternative.
There’s undoubtedly a not-too-distant competitor to the RTX 3060 Ti on the way from AMD, too. We’d suppose that’s bound to look RX 6700-shaped and offer performance upwards of the $399 RX 5700 XT—it’s certainly not impossible to picture such a card out of the red team, either, given what we know about RDNA 2 today.
But that’s a comparison for another day given the struggles AMD has similarly had getting any actual GPU stock out in front of its fans. For now the RTX 3060 Ti enters the fray unabated by any direct competitor, and as such it’s only got to impress us enough to prove it’s worth $399 of our pay packet. And it surely does.

Average Gaming Performance
Here’s a look at the average performance seen across the 18 games tested. Although we didn’t spend time looking at 1080p performance on each of the games tested so far, we did collect the data.
A look at the 1080p average data is below and as you can see at this lower resolution the RTX 3060 Ti was on average just 8% slower than the RTX 3070, though be aware at times the 3070 will have been limited by the CPU.
Still, for those gaming at 1080p with a CPU similar (or slower) than the Ryzen 9 3950X, the 3060 Ti won’t be much slower than the RTX 3070, though it also won’t be much faster than the older Radeon RX 5700 XT. Here we see a 15% performance uplift on average.
When compared to the 2060 Super we are looking at a rather massive 41% performance improvement, so that’s quite impressive.
Now at 1440p we’re almost never CPU limited, with the exception of two or three titles.
The 3060 Ti is 9% slower on average when compared to the RTX 3070, which is similar to the margin seen at 1080p. The GeForce does extend its lead over the 5700 XT out to 21%, which is a decent performance uplift, while not an extreme leap for a next generation GPU.
Of course, the super impressive leap is seen when looking at the RTX 2060 Super. Here the new RTX 3060 Ti is on average 50% faster at 1440p and that’s a serious generational improvement.
At 4K, the RTX 3060 Ti is seen trailing the 3070 by just 12%, which is a surprisingly small margin. It’s also now 28% faster than the 5700 XT which is a decent margin, though in our opinion neither are really suitable for 4K gaming. The cut off here we’d say is the 2080 Ti / RTX 3070 and even the 3070 might be questionable moving forward with its limited 8GB VRAM buffer.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti brings the entry price for Ampere GPUs down to $400, because apparently the GeForce RTX 3070, GeForce RTX 3080, and GeForce RTX 3090 weren’t selling out fast enough. Maybe that’s not fair, but round four of the Nvidia Ampere architecture seems destined to repeat recent history and sell out within minutes of launch. The fact that this is now the best price to performance ratio in GPU land makes it one of the best graphics cards, and it currently occupies seventh place on our GPU Benchmarks hierarchy, not counting any Titan cards. Maybe if you’ve been really good (or you’re really lucky), you’ll be able to procure one this side of 2021. [Update: Yup, the RTX 3060 Ti sold out fast. Here’s our advice on how to buy an RTX 3060 Ti (or other new Nvidia GPU).]
Not a whole lot has changed relative to the RTX 3070. Both the RTX 3060 Ti and 3070 use the same GA104 GPU, but the 3060 Ti has fewer functional units enabled. You get the same 8GB of GDDR6 memory, clocked at the same 14Gbps. Meanwhile, the GPU core has 38 SMs enabled, versus 46 SMs on the 3070, making the 3060 Ti theoretically around 17 percent slower. Clock speeds also factor in a bit, as the boost clock on the 3060 Ti is 3.5 percent lower, so in general, the largest performance gap will be about 20 percent — and as we’ll see, it’s often quite a bit less than that.

The specs tell the same story relative to the previous generation Nvidia Turing GPUs. The 3060 Ti has quite a bit more theoretical compute performance than the RTX 2080 Super, and more than doubles the compute performance relative to the RTX 2060 Super. We know GPU prices are all kinds of screwed up right now, but it’s worth remembering that the 2060 Super had the same official $399 price as the 3060 Ti. Power requirements are slightly higher than the 2060 Super, but lower than the 2080 Super.
Of course, theoretical specs don’t always jive with real-world performance. One of the big changes with Ampere is that the INT32 cores can now do FP32 calculations as well. However, there’s a decent amount of INT32 work in most games, so a good chunk of the potential FP32 performance is used up elsewhere. Still, with the other architectural changes, we expect the 3060 Ti to perform roughly on par with the 2080 Super, which means it will also be significantly faster than the 2060 Super.

Graphics Card Compatibility
While graphics cards are less complicated to install than other components, you will still need to do some research to ensure your new GPU is compatible with your computer. Due to the demands of some modern graphics cards, they can sometimes require larger power supplies. Specific GPUs, such as some 30 series cards from NVIDIA, will even require proprietary cables to connect to a power supply.
You will also need to think about the motherboard, cooling system, connectors (DisplayPort, HDMI, etc.), and other components when you are building your computer with a pre selected GPU. If you are considering an Intel GPU, make sure that your CPU supports either ReBAR or Smart Access Memory. Remember that form factor matters as well and you need to choose a graphics card that will fit in your case nicely. Compact and low profile graphics cards are shorter and will take up less space in the PC case, so they are ideal for those with space constraints.
Luckily, the experienced team at Micro Center is there at any time to help you find what new graphics cards are compatible with your system. The technicians at the Micro Center Service Department can even install your new component for you, saving you time and eliminating potential issues.
