Sonne

While the title «Sonne» translates to «Sun» in English, the lyrics depict a dark theme which includes counting numbers in a way that suggests manual labor, the struggle of existence, and dependence on an overpowering entity.

Sonne

«Sonne» (German for «Sun») is a song by the German Neue Deutsche Härte group Rammstein. It was the first single released from the album Mutter. According to Till Lindemann, the song was originally written as an entrance song for the boxer Vitali Klitschko, whose surname was also the working title of the song. The music video for the band’s 2019 single «Deutschland» features a piano-based version of «Sonne» on the ending credits.

English translation

Awesome job! Just a question, though. During the song and in the original German I saw ‘Sie’ in place of ‘Es’. Wouldn’t this traslate as ‘She’ in English?

Not at all. It’s just because in German the sun is a feminine word. But in English, we use the pronoun «it».

Sat, 29/06/2019 — 13:17

Not sure about it. In the video the sun ist represented by a woman, so the song is kind of ambiguous. It is about the sun, but the female associations are quite intentional.

Of course, this applies only if the Sun is personified.
But grammatically speaking, «sie» is translated into «it» when in that case it refers to the sun.

I wish I had learned a language when much younger. My parents & grandparents all spoke Lebanese but think they were trying to Americanize us children. They never tought us & spoke it when they didn’t want us to hear what they were talking about.
For several months I’ve been listening to Rammstein alot & trying to learn german from the songs. I want to understand what their singing about. It’s VERY DIFFICULT!!
Thank you to everyone who spends the time to translate these songs. Very helpful. Would actually be impossible without it.

This is not exactly correct. Rammstein famously like to play with the language and their lyrics often have double meanings. As someone pointed out, Sie can mean ‘she’, ‘you’ or (the thing as portrayed as a feminine noun). This song is most definitely about a woman. They use sun and light here as an analogy, referring to someone who is ‘as bright as the sun’.
This passage here is absolutely full of double entendre:

«Die Sonne scheint mir aus den Händen
Kann verbrennen, kann dich blenden
Wenn sie aus den Fäusten bricht
Legt sich heiß auf dein Gesicht
Legt sich schmerzend auf die Brust
Das Gleichgewicht wird zum Verlust
Lässt dich hart zu Boden geh’n
Und die Welt zählt laut bis zehn»

It is using characteristics of the sun to refer to sexual acts.

I figured that’s what that was about when I really listened to the song. That particular stanza you’ve referenced, is the act of ejaculating on someone’s [her] face: «Wenn sie aus den Fäusten bricht / Legt sich heiß auf das Gesicht».

I’m sorry but you guys couldn’t be more wrong. This song was literally written to be an entrance song for the boxer Vitali Klitschko. It was originally NAMED «Vitali». Hence the counting to 10 and all the referenced to fists and punching. Sorry to burst your bubble, but it’s still a beautiful song.

Sonne (English)

This song was origanally written for a boxer ((one of the Kitschko-brothers)) but when it was finished he refused to use it, so they put it on Mutter, the boxing element is SO clear in the song, the 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,AUS((KO)) the whole world watches him, and he will never fall from the sky ((he is the best)). Another interpretation of this song goes together with the videoclip((yes Sonne was released in Germany and Holland first not Links like in the US)) if you watch the video clip you think it’s about drugs, getting in to a trance, ((here comes the sun)).

Heh. am I the only one who gets turned on by this video? Come on vintage snow white turning out to be a harsh dominatrix, the way she glares at them, and lets not forget the spankings lol. SO nevertheless I tried to link the lyrics with the video and naturally snow white is the sun, and they all want to take her down (but she’ll not fall today), until the last line where they do take her out. Cause she’s abusing them to get drugs. But yes I know there is a much deeper meaning to it 🙂

this song is about till’s mother keeping him away from the world supposedly trying to protect him but hindering him by not allowing to have friends and in this song he describes tht as being away from the sun

I think the beginning, if heard of the radio or TV, mite make people want to turn the TV off as it sounds like a dance songs about to start, but the rest of the song is brilliant, this is the only rammstein song i like, its not that they’re bad, i think its excellent that they’ve broke into the UK!
