Galaxy a55

Other than the disappointment of this model not being sold in the U.S., the Galaxy A55 looks on paper like a convincing value buy. The performance weakness of the previous phones in the series may stick around, but the rest of the phone, especially its large display, big battery and generous set of cameras, may be all you need to convince you to buy it. Fingers crossed we’ll get back to you soon with a full review.

Samsung’s Galaxy A55 has arrived to refresh the company’s mid-priced smartphone line-up, and we’re excited to see what it’s capable of.

There have been some notable spec bumps and other quality-increasing upgrades compared to the Galaxy A54, a phone we were already big fans of. However it may also be the case that this model doesn’t get offered to U.S. customers, which would be disappointing indeed.

Whatever happens, we know the important parts of the Galaxy A55’s kit already, so let’s check it out.

Bad title

The requested page title is invalid. It may be empty, contain unsupported characters, or include a non-local or incorrectly linked interwiki prefix. You may be able to locate the desired page by searching for its name (with the interwiki prefix, if any) in the search box.

Possible causes are:

  • an attempt to load a URL such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/| (the | character is unsupported);
  • an attempt to load a URL pointing to a «non-local» interwiki page (usually those not run by the Wikimedia Foundation). For example, the URL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/meatball:WikiPedia will give this error, because the «meatball:» interwiki prefix is not marked as local in the interwiki table. Certain interwiki prefixes are marked as local in the table. For example, the URL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/meta:Main_Page can be used to load meta:Main_Page. All interlanguage prefixes are marked as local, and thus URLs such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/fr:Accueil will work as expected. However, non-local interwiki pages can still be accessed by interwiki linking or by entering them in the search box. For example [[meatball:WikiPedia]] can be used on a page, like this: meatball:WikiPedia.

How we test smartphones

Every phone reviewed on Stuff is used as our main device throughout the testing process. We use industry standard benchmarks and tests, as well as our own years of experience, to judge general performance, battery life, display, sound and camera image quality. Manufacturers have no visibility on reviews before they appear online, and we never accept payment to feature products.

Unless you know the subtle signs to look out for, you’ll have a hard time telling the Galaxy A55 apart from the much pricier Galaxy S24+. Both are metal wedges with flat screens, rounded corners and very similar styling, so there’s no question this mid-ranger does an excellent impression of a full-on flagship.

The A55’s brushed aluminium has a more ‘machined’ appearance than the S24’s smoother finish, and protrudes out slightly around the power and volume button. The three camera lenses have different trim around each lens, and the rear panel has a glossy treatment instead of satin-style glass. It’s not as effective at hiding fingerprint smudges, though how well they show up depends on which colour you go for: my Awesome Iceblue review unit looked a little grubby after a day or two, but I expect the lighter Awesome Lemon to do a better job.

Naturally the S24+ is slimmer than the A55, given its more premium status. More surprising is that it’s also shorter and narrower, despite having a larger screen. That’s a big clue as to how thick the Galaxy A55’s display bezels are. It’s still a perfectly pocket-friendly phone, though, with a decent amount of heft.

IP67 dust and water resistance is very nice to see: most mid-rangers make do with IP54, so this phone will have no trouble surviving more prolonged dunkings. I used it while caught in a rain shower to no ill effect.

An under-display fingerprint sensor is pretty much a given at this price. It’s not too close to the phone’s bottom edge, so was always easy to reach, but I wasn’t blown away by its responsiveness. I felt it took a half-second longer to bypass the lock screen than some of the affordable alternatives I’ve used recently. Face unlock is also onboard, but can’t be used to validate banking apps.

Samsung Galaxy A55 review: Verdict

I’m happy to report that the Samsung Galaxy A55 is cheap but very good, just like the phones that came before it. Although the inbound Pixel 8a could spell trouble, the Galaxy A55 could still be the better value of the two if the Pixel remains more expensive than the Samsung.

Future-gazing aside, the Galaxy A55 has a better blend of features than the performance-oriented OnePlus 12R, and is noticeably cheaper too if you don’t have access to the cheaper 8GB/128GB variant. As for Google’s current Pixel 7a, you get a more consistent photography experience with it than with the Galaxy A55, and it’s a little more powerful too. But the Galaxy’s larger size and surprisingly usable macro camera may be enough to persuade you to stick with Samsung instead.

The Galaxy A55, as of the publishing of this review, is definitely going on the top of our best cheap phones guide. The only question is if it’ll be that long until it gets dethroned, possibly by its sibling the Galaxy A35. But even without a gold medal, the Galaxy A55 could still be a no. 1 pick.
