Samsung s22 ultra
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra looks determined to top our best camera phone list and unseat Apple and Google. Our testing shows that the S22 Ultra is a very good camera phone, but it’s quite the champ.

Design
The difference between the S22 Ultra and last year’s model starts with their design. The S22 Ultra is pretty much a Note 20 Ultra clone, which makes it a departure from the S21 Ultra’s rounder silhouette. With the same rectangular shape, curved edges and matte brushed metal finish, the two handsets look and feel almost identical. The S Pen slot is even in the same location at the left side of the bottom edge. If I didn’t give you the exact dimensions, you probably wouldn’t even be able to tell that the S22 Ultra is slightly wider, shorter and thicker than the Note. You might notice, though, that the S22 Ultra is about 21 grams (or 0.74 ounces) heavier.

Samsung Galaxy S22: design & build
As revealed by endless leaks in the lead up to its unveiling, the Samsung Galaxy S22 family actually spans two quite different smartphone concepts.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus follow the mould set by the S21 and S21 Plus in 2021. That means metal chassis, frame-filling notchless displays (with uniform bezels), neatly rounded corners and flat rear panels. Both the S22 and S22 Plus are fitted with tough Corning Gorilla Glass Victus Plus. Round the back, the familiar Contour Cut camera housing harbours three lenses in a vertical line.
What about the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra? Well, it’s more of an S22/Note hybrid. The most expensive entry in the latest Galaxy line-up keeps a few design cues from the S21 Ultra, but also adopts several styling hints from the apparently defunct Note series. Chief among them are squared-off corners which give the S22 Ultra the same bold, angular look previously adopted by the Note series. It’s also the only phone in the updated Galaxy family to feature a screen which wraps around slightly at the edges.
Gone is the bulky camera bump of the S21 Ultra in favour of five protrusions residing individually on the rear – although these don’t sit flush with the shell, so the S22 Ultra still won’t lie flat on a surface.
The S22 Ultra is also the only Galaxy smartphone in 2022 to offer S Pen support, with a Note-style slot for the in the bottom left corner. And it’s a whopper at 6.8in. So while it might be labelled as an S22, the Ultra is clearly a spiritual successor to the Note – and it’s being pitched at the same target market: people who want a giant flagship smartphone with a stylus.
As for finishes, the whole S22 range will be available in ‘Phantom Black’, ‘Phantom White’ and ghoul-free ‘Green’ colour schemes. The S22 and S22 Plus will also ship with a ‘Pink Gold’ jacket, while the S22 Ultra gets a classy ‘Burgundy’ coat instead.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra review: Display
Samsung just upped the ante for display quality with the Galaxy S22 Ultra. As before, you get a dynamic 120Hz refresh rate, which made for smooth scrolling during our hands-on time. And there’s a 240Hz touch sampling rate that gamers should appreciate.
But there are two notable display upgrades here. The first is that the screen has a peak brightness of 1,750 nits, which could be the brightest we’ve ever seen. (The standard brightness level is 1,250 nits, which is still quite high.)
The other display perk is a new Vision Booster feature, which can adjust the screen’s brightness on the fly throughout the day. This means that you should have no problems using the S22 Ultra outdoors even in very strong sunlight.

I took the Galaxy S22 Ultra to Bryant Park with the iPhone 13 Pro Max and Google Pixel 6 Pro, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s display was noticeably brighter than the two competing phones when I fired up the trailer for Reacher.
When watching a trailer for Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, this Galaxy S22 Ultra’s panel delivered rich colors and wide viewing angles, along with smooth motion during action scenes.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra | iPhone 13 Pro Max | Google Pixel 6 Pro | |
Max brightness | 1,359 nits | 1,038 nits | 842 nits |
sRGB color gamut | 137.5% | 109.3% | 104.2% |
DCI-P3 color gamut | 97.4% | 77.4% | 73.8 |
Delta-E color accuracy (lower is better) | 0.25 | 0.21 | 0.3 |
The Galaxy S22 Ultra’s panel also impressed in our lab tests, as it reached a very high max brightness of 1,359 nits, compared to 1,038 nits for the iPhone 13 Pro Max and 842 nits for the Google Pixel 6 Pro.
In addition, the Galaxy S22 Ultra beat the competition on color reproduction, as it notched scores of 137.5% and 97.4% on the sRGB and DCI-P3 tests, compared to 109.3%/77.4% and 104.2%/73.8% for the iPhone 13 Pro Max and Pixel 6 Pro, respectively.
The only are where the S22 Ultra fell behind the iPhone was color accuracy, as it turned in a Delta-E score of 0.25 (where 0 is perfect). The iPhone 13 Pro Max hit 0.21.
One potential issue with the S22 Ultra’s display has been noted by several users (though not us) who got their devices early. These units produce strange static-like bands across the display, but the issue is limited to Exynos-powered devices and Samsung promises a fix.
Should you upgrade?

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is mostly an iterative update to the S21 Ultra, but wrapped in a new Galaxy Note-inspired look. It has the standard upgrades you’d expect from a next-generation phone — such as a newer processor — but is otherwise very similar. This feels like an update really aimed at Galaxy Note fans, especially those who may have passed on the Note 20 Ultra and are looking to upgrade from a phone that came out more than two years ago.
The inclusion of the S Pen and better low-light photography are the most noticeable improvements by far. If you already have an S21 Ultra, there’s no need to upgrade since you can always buy an S Pen separately. Since Samsung hasn’t raised the price of the S22 Ultra since last year, I don’t mind the two phones’ many similarities. I only wish Samsung had improved the S22 Ultra’s battery life.
If you own a Galaxy S20 Ultra, the biggest changes you’d get with the S22 Ultra are an additional telephoto lens, the S Pen, a processor that’s substantially newer and better low-light photography. Note 20 Ultra owners, meanwhile, will also see a bigger leap forward in camera performance, considering Samsung’s last high-end Note only has one 12-megapixel telephoto lens and a 5x optical zoom. The S22 Ultra also has a slightly larger battery than the Note 20 Ultra.
That might be worth an upgrade for some people, but where you really start to see a difference is when upgrading from older phones in the S10 generation and earlier. Not only does the S10 Plus run on a much older processor, but it also lacks the 108-megapixel main camera Samsung began putting in its high-end phones starting with the S20 Ultra.
If you’re trying to decide between the S22 Plus and S22 Ultra, the biggest considerations should be screen size, the S Pen and the camera’s telephoto lens. Those are the major elements that set this phone apart from Samsung’s 6.6-inch Galaxy S22 Plus . Yes, the S22 Ultra has a higher-resolution main camera lens, but the S22 Plus still takes great photos that are almost just as good as the Ultra’s in some cases.
All told, the S22 Ultra is the Galaxy Note upgrade we never got last year. It doesn’t push things forward in a major way compared with last year’s Ultra, so it’s only worth upgrading if you have a phone that’s at least two years old. But since Samsung isn’t raising the price, I’m alright with that.
