Just as we haven’t had a chance to run battery tests on Samsung’s new phones (apart from the Ultra, as you can see in our Galaxy S23 Ultra review), we also haven’t timed how long it takes the S23 and S23 Plus to get fully charged. However, since last year’s Galaxy S22 models had the same charging speeds, we’re not expecting much of a change here. Back then, the Galaxy S22 Plus was able to get 10% more of a charge than the S22 after 30 minutes of charging.

We just tested the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra battery life — this is amazing

The testing for our Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra review reveals one of the biggest areas of improvement for this flagship phone: battery life. Yes, this handset packs the same 5,000 mAh battery as its predecessor, but we’re seeing much better endurance this time around.

On the Tom’s Guide Battery test, we take each phone and surf the web over a 5G connection at 150 nits of brightness. Phones that last at least 11.5 hours on this take test make it on our best phone battery life list. And the Samsung S23 Ultra now belongs on that list.

First we ran our battery test on Adaptive mode for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which enables the screen to scale anywhere from 1Hz all the way up to 120Hz. Then, we ran the test again in 60Hz mode, which uses less power.

On adaptive mode, the Samsung S23 Ultra lasted a very good 12 hours and 22 minutes. That’s a big jump from the 9:50 we saw from the S22 Ultra. This could be due to the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chip, which is designed to be more efficient. Though we’re assuming Samsung made other optimizations as well.

The runtime got even better in 60Hz mode, as the S23 Ultra endured for an epic 12 hours and 9 minutes. That’s only 30 minutes behind the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s best result of 13:39.

There are other phones that last even longer on a charge. The Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro and its 6,000 mAh battery lasted 15:30 in adaptive mode and 16:27 in 60Hz mode. The Moto G Power 2022 ran for 13:15, though that’s a budget phone.

So with this result the Galaxy S23 Ultra will definitely be among the longest-lasting phones you can buy. There are other phones on the horizon that could surpass this Samsung, such as the OnePlus 11, but we’ll have to see what our testing shows.

According to its official measurements, the Galaxy S23 should look and feel about the same as the Galaxy S22, with differences in dimensions and weight measured by mere decimal points. The new model is slightly larger and heavier, but these changes are unlikely to impact your buying decision.

Like Samsung’s other flagship phones, the Galaxy S23 is rated IP68 for dust/water resistance, which is currently the gold standard for smartphones. There’s no better guarantee your phone will keep water drops or dust particles away from its sensitive components unless you go for a specific ultra-durable phone.

To protect the phone from scratches and drop damage, the Galaxy S23 is clad in Gorilla Glass Victus 2. This is tougher than the Gorilla Glass Victus Plus used by the Galaxy S22 lineup. The S23 also uses an Armor Aluminum frame like the S22 to protect the edges from harm.

Samsung Galaxy S23: Release date, price, and deals

At the Galaxy Unpacked February 2023 event, Samsung revealed that the Galaxy S23 phones would officially ship on February 17. While you’ll undoubtedly continue to see trade-in and carrier deals after that date, we’re going to focus on the Galaxy S23 preorder deals available now that may disappear after the 17th.

The Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra cost $800/ £850, $1,000/ £1,050, and $1,200/ £1,250, respectively. In other words, the pricing hasn’t changed compared to the Galaxy S22 series.

If you preorder your phone from Samsung with an eligible trade-in with a carrier, you can get up to $1,000 off — meaning you’ll get the S23 or S23+ for «free» or the S23 Ultra for just $200. You’ll also get a free storage upgrade to 256GB for the Galaxy S23 or 512GB for the Galaxy S23+ and Ultra.

T-Mobile and AT&T are offering up to $1,000 off with trade-in and activation through Samsung, while Verizon and unlocked purchases can get up to $800 off and $830 off with trade-in, respectively. Or, without a trade-in, you’ll still get a free storage upgrade and $100-$150 of instant Samsung credit when you use this link.

Otherwise, you’ll want to check out other retailers directly to see what kind of deals they offer. Best Buy, for instance, has similar trade-in deals while offering gift cards to their own storefront instead — which many people will prefer for the variety of items on sale. And this Verizon trade-in deal gives you more value for older phones, assuming you’re willing to add a new line.

Samsung Galaxy S23 vs. Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus: Battery size

A bigger phone means more space for the battery, and the Galaxy S23 Plus takes advantage of that with a 4,700 mAH power pack. In contrast, the Galaxy S23 offers a 3,900 mAH cell.

While we’ve had some Galaxy S23 hands-on time, that hasn’t provided enough of a chance to run battery tests on either the S23 or the S23 Plus. Past battery testing would make us think the larger battery in the Plus model will translate to longer battery life for that phone, even with the larger screen to keep powered up. But we won’t know for certain until we run our tests.

Battery life: bigger means better

The Galaxy S22 came in for a bit of stick over its limited battery life, so Samsung has squeezed in a larger cell this time around. 3900mAh is still on the small side, but any increase is a welcome one. Add in the more efficient CPU, plus a little Samsung optimisation magic, and the S23 is an amazing performer away from the mains.

It breezed through from breakfast to bedtime without having to dip into the power saving settings, even with a healthy mix of camera use, gaming, video playback and apps that make more modest use of all the power on tap. This is now very much an all-day phone, with enough in the tank to last until the next morning without needing an overnight charge.

That said, with charging speeds that still lag behind rivals, I imagine most owners are still going to leave it sipping down power while they slumber. The S23 is limited to pedestrian 25W wired top-ups, while the pricier S23 Ultra gets 45W – and both are less than half of what the OnePlus 11 can manage. I appreciate the returning inclusion of convenient wireless charging, though.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 marks the first big phone launch of 2023, and – having been announced alongside the Galaxy S23 Plus and Galaxy S23 Ultra on February 1 – it won’t come as a surprise to learn that it’s likely to be one of the best phones money can buy this year.

The vanilla model in Samsung’s latest Galaxy lineup doesn’t represent a monumental upgrade over its predecessor, the Galaxy S22, but a slight design change – and one very significant under-the-hood improvement – does make the Galaxy S23 a worthy competitor to similarly-priced phones like the iPhone 14 and Google Pixel 7 Pro.

On the design front, both the Galaxy S23 and its larger sibling, the S23 Plus, do away with the S22’s raised metal contour in favor of S22 Ultra-style individual camera lenses, though the phone is essentially the same size and weight as its predecessor.

Instead of inheriting the S22 Ultra’s impressive camera array and 108MP sensor, Samsung opted to leave the S23 camera array largely unchanged, meaning it still sports a 50MP wide lens, 12MP ultrawide lens and 10MP optically stabilized 3x optical zoom camera. The front camera is just 12MP, though this is still an upgrade on the S22’s 10MP selfie camera.

The main improvement on this phone is its powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which is the real highlight of the Galaxy S23 and its larger siblings.
