- Why switch to USB-C?
- Are all USB Type-C cables the same?
- How fast is data transfer on USB-C?
- What is Thunderbolt?
- Will my battery actually charge faster?
- Will I need new power adapters?
- Are you sure this USB-C thing isn’t a fad?
Most new phones, including iPhones, have moved to USB-C for data transfer and charging, making it easier than ever to make sure you’ve got the right cable in your bag to keep all of your tech running. Replacing MicroUSB on Android and Lightning on iPhone, USB-C has enabled faster charging and higher data speeds than this older standard supported. USB-C is also easier to plug in with its reversible connector and the same plug on either end of the cable.
Still, USB-C isn’t perfect, and it has become frustratingly tedious to determine the quality of an unknown cable. It can be impossible to know just how much power or how fast a USB-C cable is until you plug it in.
Bad title
The requested page title is invalid. It may be empty, contain unsupported characters, or include a non-local or incorrectly linked interwiki prefix. You may be able to locate the desired page by searching for its name (with the interwiki prefix, if any) in the search box.
Possible causes are:
- an attempt to load a URL such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/| (the | character is unsupported);
- an attempt to load a URL pointing to a «non-local» interwiki page (usually those not run by the Wikimedia Foundation). For example, the URL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/meatball:WikiPedia will give this error, because the «meatball:» interwiki prefix is not marked as local in the interwiki table. Certain interwiki prefixes are marked as local in the table. For example, the URL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/meta:Main_Page can be used to load meta:Main_Page. All interlanguage prefixes are marked as local, and thus URLs such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/fr:Accueil will work as expected. However, non-local interwiki pages can still be accessed by interwiki linking or by entering them in the search box. For example [[meatball:WikiPedia]] can be used on a page, like this: meatball:WikiPedia.

USB standards: USB 3.1, USB 3.2, and USB 4
USB 4
USB4 and USB-A
The latest USB standard, USB 4, was released in 2019. It offers a maximum data transfer rate of 40Gbps, making it twice as fast as Thunderbolt 3. Intel has donated its Thunderbolt 3 protocol specification to the USB-IF, which aligns it with the Thunderbolt 4 specification. As a result, USB 4 devices are compatible with Thunderbolt 3 ports, and vice versa.
The USB-IF is a non-profit corporation founded by the developers of USB, and it sets the standards for USB technology. USB 4 is now found exclusively in the USB-C connector and is commonly used for external hard drives, SSDs, video devices, monitors, and docks.
Key features of USB 4 include:
- 40Gbps data transfer rate: USB 4 can transfer data at up to 40Gbps, twice as fast as Thunderbolt 3. You can transfer large files much faster, such as HD videos. USB 4 can transfer data at up to 40Gbps, twice as fast as Thunderbolt 3. You can also transfer large files much faster, such as HD videos.
- Thunderbolt: USB 4 and Thunderbolt 3 ports are interchangeable, offering more device and cable options.
- Single cable docking: USB 4 can link various devices to a single port, reducing cable clutter and organizing your workspace.
- Power delivery: USB 4 can deliver up to 100 watts of power, enough to charge most laptops and tablets with a single data transfer cable.
Various devices use the USB 4 standard, including phones, laptops, external hard drives, SSDs, monitors, and docks.
USB-C, explained
The USB-C connector is immediately recognizable, because unlike the older USB-A, it has an oval shape — a rectangle with its corners smoothed into a curve. It’s completely symmetrical, so it’s impossible to insert incorrectly.
In addition, USB-C is narrow enough that it can fit on phones with no problem. This means that it can be a standard connector for both computers and phones, as well as other devices like game consoles.
Some popular devices that use USB-C cables are the Nintendo Switch, MacBook Pro, and Samsung Galaxy line of phones.
USB-C is a smarter connector because it’s perfectly symmetrical — you can insert it blind-folded. Santeri Viinamäki
